HB Public Law is recruiting a Chief Legal Advisor into the team, alongside a variety of other positions across its Children's Social Care, Housing and Civil Litigation - as well as a Chief Legal Advisor role. There are 8 live roles at junior and senior levels, reflecting continued growth and demand across the service.

Chief Legal Advisor

Available role:

Our Chief Legal Advisors lead, direct and develop HB Public Law alongside the Assistant Director of Legal and Governance, they contribute to the management of the legal and governance services department.

Our highly skilled Chief Legal Advisors ensure the team is managed efficiently and effectively, maintaining client care standards as well as building and maintaining effective working relationships with senior client managers. They regularly advise council, cabinet and committee meetings, as well as represent the practice at Lawyers in Local Government, the London Borough’s Legal Alliance as well as at other professional bodies.

Additionally, the Chief Legal Advisors motivate and develop our team, they play a key role in delivering service excellence across the practice. They are the client lead in their specialisms and work alongside the team to resolve complex legal issues and undertake legal and governance work to support the Monitoring Officer.

Housing & Civil Litigation

Available roles:

We advise and represent clients in a wide range of housing litigation matters, including insurance work, commercial and contractual disputes, injunctions and judicial reviews.

We are experienced in dealing with housing litigation cases from county court level all the way through to the European Court of Justice. We undertake advocacy in contested trials, committal proceedings, tribunal and criminal courts, and have preferential barrister fees through the London Boroughs Legal Alliance.

We work on possession and related claims due to a wide range of factors including rent arrears, under occupation, illegal occupation, nuisance and criminal activities, and tenancies gained by deception. We also deal with criminal and civil actions to tackle housing fraud.

We advise on homelessness issues such as section 204 Housing Act appeals and defending judicial review claims relating to homelessness. We advise on and seek court injunctions including urgent/same day injunctions and anti-social behaviour injunctions (ASBIs) and orders (ASBOs) and those for unlawful use of premises including obtaining exclusion orders and powers of arrest. We also defend and advise on disrepair claims, including quantum.

We offer bespoke and practical training on all areas of Housing Law, and can also provide an advice surgery for initial queries.

Children's Social Care

Available roles:

We are a large team of lawyers supported by legal assistants and support staff, providing specialist advice to Children's Services in LB Barnet. The team is a stable and supportive team, who work collaboratively together. The majority of the case work involves matters in pre-proceedings and care proceedings. The cases range from straight forward matters to complex proceedings, and more inexperienced members of staff have opportunities to co-work cases with more senior members of the team in order to have exposure to such matters and develop further.  

We provide an opportunity to undertake advocacy and support candidates who are willing to undertake advocacy but lack previous experience by offering training from colleagues.

We advise our clients on adoption, fostering and discharge of care orders, as well as advice on policy matters and pre-action matters/judicial review. It is not essential that a candidate has previous experience of these areas as training can be provided.

We often provide training to the client department, and this is shared between team members, which provides a good opportunity for relationship building and other skills. More senior team members provide advice to decision making panels.

The focus of this recruitment is for the Barnet Children’s Social Care team but roles covering the other partnership authorities may be offered.
